The three year required mathematics courses are built around five process strands: Problem Solving, Reasoning & Proof, Communication, Connections, and Representations as well as five content strands: Number Sense and Operations, Algebra, Geometry, Measurement, and Statistics & Probability. In addition, there are several 4th year electives, including courses for college credit.
Required Courses
Math 9 - Algebra Algebra provides tools and ways of thinking that are necessary for solving problems in a wide variety of disciplines, such as science, business, social sciences, fine arts, and technology. This course will assist students in developing skills and processes to be applied using a variety of techniques to successfully solve problems in a variety of settings.
Math 10 - Geometry This is the second course in mathematics for high school students. Within this course, students will have the opportunity to make conjectures about geometric situations and prove in a variety of ways that their conclusion follows logically from their hypothesis. Geometry is meant to lead students to an understanding that reasoning and proof are fundamental aspects of mathematics.
Math 11 - Algebra 2 & Trigonometry This course is a continuation and extension of the two courses that preceded it. While developing advance algebraic techniques, this course will also develop alternative solution strategies and algorithms. Problem situations requiring the use of trigonometric equations and identities will also be investigated.
Math 12: Introductory Analysis (11th/12th Year) This course is the culmination of high school mathematics. Topics covered are: higher degree equations, exponential and logarithmic functions, complex numbers, conic sections, polar coordinates, probability and introductory concepts of limit and calculus. This course prepares the student to take calculus in college and should be taken by anyone who intends a mathematical, engineering or scientific college major or career.
College Algebra (12th Year) Available to students who wish additional preparation for college academics, business and technical programs. It covers extended topics in trigonometry and selected topics from Sequential Math.
Calculus (12th Year) This introductory calculus course will cover topics presented during the first year of college calculus. This rigorous course will provide students with a strong background in calculus. This course is part of the High School Extension Program of St. John's University. Successful completion will result in eight credits awarded by St. John's University.
AP Calculus (12th Year) This course follows the AB version of the Advanced Placement syllabus and is the equivalent of a two semester college course in Differential and Integral Calculus. College credit may be gained through the Advanced Placement Exam offered at the end of the course. There is an examination fee set by the Educational Testing Service.
