All students are required to successfully complete a four year program, emphasizing reading, writing, and speaking skills in the study of literature and vocabulary. The Comprehensive English required program that emphasizes reading, writing, and speaking skills in the study of literature and vocabulary. The Comprehensive English Regents culminates the junior year.
Required Courses
English 9 (9th Year) An introduction to the elements
of literature: short story, drama, novel, and poetry. Extensive work in
writing and vocabulary studies. Introduction of Tasks #1 and 2 as
preparation for the English Regents. Related research projects and outside reading required. English 10 (10th Year) A survey of American literature, with emphasis on writing, vocabulary, and speaking skills. Introduction to Tasks #3 and 4 as preparation for the English Regents. Research projects and outside reading required.
English 11 (11th Year) A survey of British literature with emphasis on writing and speaking skills. Vocabulary and writing studies prepare students for the SAT, ACT, and Comprehensive English Regents exams. Related research projects and outside reading required.
English 12 (12th Year) A survey of global literature with emphasis on developing mature composition, research skills, and oral presentation necessary for the college classroom. Related research projects and outside reading required.
College English (12th Year) A rigorous study of global literature emphasizing cultural values in a diverse world. Composition and discussion skills are cultivated on a college level to support the literature. The class is designed highly capable students who possess developed reading, writing, and speaking skills. Upon successful completion, six credits will be awarded by St. John's University. St. John's tuition is for the credits is currently $200 per semester.
Advanced Placement English (12th Year) A challenging integrated
study of a diverse canon of literature that incorporates political
history, philosophy, and religion. Designed for exceptional students who
possess developed reading, writing, and speaking skills. The Advanced
Placement English Literature Examination is required for completion of
the course and possible college credit. An examination fee is set by the
Educational Testing Service.
